OI was developed based on the observation of large innovative companies and their deviations from traditional ways of innovating ( Chesbrough, 2003, 2006). As a demonstration of its importance, Chesbrough’s study has gained more than 19,000 citations in 16 years, according to Google Scholar (Google Scholar, July 2019), with this number growing on a daily basis. Since the 2003 publication of Chesbrough’s seminal work, Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology, the concept of open innovation (OI) has garnered increasing attention from academics and practitioners alike.
